Support ABC No Rio
On June 29, 2006 ABC No Rio took ownership of the building at 156 Rivington Street.
From our own community of artists, activists, performers, patrons and supporters we've raised over $450,000 for our Building Fund. From people who believe in what we do, and who want to see ABC No Rio continue and to further develop the resources, facilities and programs we offer.
In the summer of 2009 we were awarded significant City funding for the construction of our new building.
Thanks to Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, our City Council representative, Alan Gerson, and the Council's Manhattan Delegation, we have been awarded $1,650,000 in City funding. It has been an exciting period for us, as we not only plan for the future, but also see the City share your recognition of ABC No Rio's importance, and your confidence in ABC No Rio's mission, purpose and plans for the future.
Recognizing the challenging economic and funding environment, our plan to develop the site at 156 Rivington Street is divided into two distinct phases. The first is to build a single-story structure with basement that will allow ABC No Rio to resume its public events programming and administration on site. This will be followed by a second phase of construction: three additional floors to house ABC No Rio's screenprinting shop, darkroom, zine library, and technology resources.
Through new construction we will augment and enhance ABC No Rio's use of the site for all our projects and programs. It will cost almost $4.5 million. That's a lot of money. But with your help we can do it, and we really believe the end result will be worth it.
Continued public support is necessary for us to meet the challenges ahead.
The battle to secure ABC No Rio has been waged through Do-It-Yourself volunteerism, art and activism, without giving-in or selling-out to corporate sponsors.
Our 'culture of opposition' goes back almost thirty years to our founding.
