Mythical Common Land
ABC No Rio in Exile at Umbrella House

Myths are customarily simple stories and the most fascinating aspect about myth is that it knows it's not a "fact." Myth is flexible, subjective, and has room for imagination, alteration, and can build a bridge between past and present. Mythical Common Land invites artists working in film and video to share twork that revolves around a space they inhabit, whether physically or virtually, and their interpersonal relationship and experience with that space.

Mythical Common Land will open at Umbrella House on June 23 and the installation will be open to the public on the weekends of June 23 and June 30.

We are looking for works ranging from 5 to 20 minutes.

Mythical Common Land is curated by Priyanka Das and organized by Priyanka and ABC No Rio.

Submission Deadline: June 19, 2023.

Please submit your work to daspriyanka_5 [at] yahoo.com

Curator's statement: My intention behind this project is to invite artists to submit video/digital work that acknowledges the relationship between our lived experiences and the physical space we primarily occupy, i.e. our neighborhood, home, street, workspace, public space, game space, etc. The interpersonal relationships between any of these two impact the value we seek in our lived experiences and how it either gets fulfilled or is taken away by state policies or personal negligence. I believe that the space we occupy in our daily dwellings leaves a major imprint on our personal and political understandings and development.

Mythical Common Land is funded in part by the New York State Council on Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs
